For example, repair and maintenance information about a machine could be seen when you look at a piece of equipment. Load capacity of a dump truck could be calculated by the distance between the ground and the bed.

AR has four distinct tasks:

1. Capture: The reality that is set to be augmented is captured using a video device.
2. Identification: Reality is scanned to determine the exact position for where the virtual content should be displayed and embedded. Positions can be identified by markers, infrared, GPS, sensors, or lasers.
3. Processing: As the environment is recognized and identified, the corresponding virtual content is requested from the internet or another database.
4. Visualization: A mixed image of real space and virtual content is produced.

It’s important to differentiate augmented reality from virtual reality (VR). Unlike VR, which creates a totally artificial environment, AR simply overlays information in the existing environment.

Industries Using Augmented Reality to Stay Ahead

Planners used augmented reality to gauge the devastation of the earthquake. Now, many companies are using it for construction and earthquake investigation.

AR could allow architects and project managers to see what their buildings would be like. It will give life to the 2D drawings. They can get an idea of the implications a building’s position and design could have on the area. For example, an engineer could learn that the building’s design would create unwanted heavy winds at the street-level, known as the downdraught effect.


Logistic companies could use AR devices to stock and store inventory to minimize dead space. For example, an AR device would tell a worker which package to take and exactly where to place it on the racks. It would do this by loading instructions with arrows or other markers to identify a suitable target area.

Think of it like Tetris, where a gamer has to place the next random item according to its shape in order to maximize available space and avoid gaps.


Classroom applications of AR are abundant. In the healthcare education industry, AR could be used to teach residents or students exactly how the heartbeats or the diaphragm moves. People can learn anatomy in the context of real life and real time rather than viewing images in a book.

For many businesses, AR could be an effective way to train staff. For example, General Motors is using AR to train factory workers in real time and provide immediate feedback, with users seeing the correct techniques.

Skilled Trades and Maintenance
